GATTACA movie project
Purpose
What was the purpose of the project?
The purpose of this project was to learn about DNA and collaborate with others to create a cohesive film about DNA. WE started this project by watching the movie GATTACA. Our class was super inspired by the film so we decided to base our movie off it as well as take our own spin on it. Our movie was about a girl who was born with an illness called cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs and the main character's ability to function normally. This disorder disabled her to do things she always dreamed about doing, such as mountaineering.
To what extent did you, as an individual, meet that purpose?
As an individual I took on many roles in order to be a part of the team and movie. I was an art director and filmer. I worked along the side the director to make sure we had certain props that were necessary for our movie. For example; I made sure we had sheets (for the bed and walls), a bed, pillows, blankets, costumes, magazines, side tables and chairs. I was also a big part of setting up scenes and getting the right camera angles.
To what extent did we, as a whole class, meet that purpose?
I felt that we as a team did the best we could do. We did not complete our movie with the given time but, I felt like almost the whole class collaborated and was a part of the movie. This is difficult to do.
Warm Feedback
What did you personally do well throughout the project?
Throughout this project I became more of a leader. Since I was an art director making sure we had all the necessary props was super important. I made a spreadsheet with what props we needed for the film and had people sign up what they wanted to bring in.
What did the whole class do well throughout the project?
The whole class did a good job of being open minded and listening to others ideas and thoughts for the film. One specific example is when we all voted for what we wanted to do for our film. Even though not everyone wanted our film to be based off of GATTACA there were no hard feelings and people were still wanting to work super hard on the project.
Areas for Growth
What challenges did you experience on a personal level (try to think about what you had control over)?
Sometimes after everyone brought in there props, all the scenes were properly set up and there were no filmers needed I didn’t have much to do.
What challenges did we experience as a whole class?
It was very difficult when certain individuals didn’t bring in the props that we needed in order to film. It was also very challenging when the actor’s didn’t show up because I felt like I didn’t have much I could work on.
How could these challenges (both personal and whole class) be better handled in the future (again, think about what you can control)?
Looking back on the project, If I had the chance to work on it again I would have loved to be apart of the editing team. I think one of the main reasons we didn't finish our film in time is because we didn't have enough editors. If one of the editors (Sadie or Henry) taught me the basics of editing I think I could have made an impact on whether or not we could have completed the film in time.
What did collaboration look like in this project?
Collaboration was when we as a class would all meet in a big table group and all discuss how we wanted our film to look and the schedule of when we would shoot certain scenes. When we were all in these table groups I felt as if the whole class wanted to contribute to the film!
How did you collaborate in this project?
Collaboration has always been difficult for me because I usually have certain visions on how I want a project to look. This project collaboration worked really well because I was able to use of own visions and ideas of how I wanted certain scenes to look as well as ideas from others. Combining our ideas together made the overall scenes look aesthetically better! I learned that it’s super important to trust others in order to have a better looking project.
Looking forward: If you were to do this project again...
What would you change about your approach to collaboration?
I would have liked to know that it's really important to trust others from the start. I think that after this project I will keep that in mind and it will be useful for when I collaborate with others not only in school but in life as well.
What would you change about the project?
I definitely would have liked to have more for our project and learn how to edit films. I think it would be really beneficial to have Roxy come into our class and teach more people how to edit. Like I said earlier not having enough editors was one of the main reasons for not finishing our film.
What would you keep the same about the project?
I loved how it was an all class project. I think it was beneficial to break students into categories and have them work on a part of the film that was the most interesting to them. Since I got to work on a part of the film that was interesting to me (Art) I had fun with the project and wanted every scene to look good!
